1. Is Sports Betting Legal?
South Africa
Sports betting is fully legal and regulated in South Africa under the National Gambling Act of 2004. All major bookmakers are licensed by provincial gambling boards — the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board, Gauteng Gambling Board, and others. You must be 18 or older and will need to complete FICA (Know Your Customer) verification before withdrawing funds.
United States
Sports betting was legalised federally in 2018 after the Supreme Court overturned PASPA. It is now legal in over 35 states including New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Colorado and more. Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) is legal in most states as a skill-based game. Check your state's current status before betting — ESPN's state tracker is a good resource.
2. How Odds Work
Odds tell you two things: the probability the bookmaker assigns to each outcome, and how much you'll win if your bet is successful. There are three main formats:
| Format | Example | Used In | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Decimal | 2.50 | South Africa, Europe, Australia | Multiply stake by odds. R100 × 2.50 = R250 return (R150 profit) |
| American (Moneyline) | +150 / -110 | USA | +150: Bet $100 win $150. -110: Bet $110 win $100 |
| Fractional | 3/2 | UK, Ireland | Win £3 for every £2 staked (profit only, not total return) |
To convert decimal odds to implied probability: 1 ÷ decimal odds × 100. So odds of 2.50 = 1/2.50 = 40% implied probability. If you think the true probability is higher than 40%, this is a value bet.
Understanding the Vig (Juice)
Bookmakers don't offer true odds — they build in a margin called the vig or juice. This is how they make money regardless of who wins. For example, a coin flip should be offered at 2.00/2.00 (50%/50%), but a bookmaker might offer 1.91/1.91 — the difference is their margin. Shop around for the best odds before placing any bet.
3. Types of Bets
4. Bankroll Management
The most important skill in sports betting is managing your bankroll. Even profitable bettors have losing runs — without proper staking, a losing streak will wipe out your funds before the winners come.
The 1–3% Rule
Never risk more than 1–3% of your total bankroll on a single bet. If your bankroll is R1,000, your maximum single bet should be R10–R30. This protects you from a losing run and keeps you in the game long enough for your edge to play out.
| Bankroll | 1% Stake | 2% Stake | 3% Stake |
|---|---|---|---|
| R500 | R5 | R10 | R15 |
| R1,000 | R10 | R20 | R30 |
| R5,000 | R50 | R100 | R150 |
| $100 (US) | $1 | $2 | $3 |
| $500 (US) | $5 | $10 | $15 |
The single most dangerous habit in betting is increasing your stakes to recover losses ("chasing"). This almost always leads to larger losses. Accept that losing runs are part of betting and stick to your staking plan regardless of recent results.

6. Betting in the USA — Sports Betting & DFS
Sports Betting vs. Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS)
There are two main ways to bet on sports in the USA:
- Sports Betting (Sportsbooks) — Traditional betting on game outcomes, spreads, moneylines. Available through DraftKings Sportsbook, FanDuel Sportsbook, BetMGM, Caesars, ESPN BET, and others. Legal in 35+ states.
- Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) — Skill-based contests where you pick player lineups and compete against other users (not the house). Legal in ~45 states. DraftKings and FanDuel dominate the DFS market. Full DFS guide →
Top US Sportsbooks Compared
The major licensed sportsbooks operating in the USA are largely similar in the markets and bet types they offer. Key differences:
- DraftKings — Market leader in DFS, best for same-game parlays and NFL. Offers Bet $5 Get $200 new user bonus in most states
- FanDuel — Best mobile app, excellent live in-play betting. Bet $5 Get $150 new user offer
- BetMGM — Best welcome bonus ($1,500 first bet offer), strongest casino crossover. Available in 25+ states
- PrizePicks — Best player props and projections platform. Works in 45+ states as a DFS-style game
Different sportsbooks post slightly different odds on the same game. Opening accounts at 2–3 books and always betting the best available line (line shopping) can improve your long-term results by 2–5%. Over hundreds of bets, this adds up significantly.
7. Beginner Tips to Bet Smarter
- Start small — Begin with your minimum stake until you understand how the markets work
- Specialise — Pick one or two sports or leagues you know well. Trying to bet on everything leads to poor decisions
- Track every bet — Keep a simple spreadsheet of your bets, odds, stakes and results. You cannot improve what you don't measure
- Fade the public — When 80%+ of money is on one side, the odds are often inflated against it. Sometimes the opposite side offers value
- Avoid parlays until experienced — Accumulators/parlays are exciting but the house edge compounds with each leg. Begin with single bets
- Use bonuses wisely — Read all T&Cs before claiming a welcome bonus. Some require 10× rollover before withdrawal
- Set a monthly budget and stick to it — Treat betting as entertainment with a fixed monthly budget, not as income
- Take breaks — If you've had a bad run, take a few days off before returning
