South Africa

Sports betting is fully legal and regulated in South Africa under the National Gambling Act of 2004. All major bookmakers are licensed by provincial gambling boards — the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board, Gauteng Gambling Board, and others. You must be 18 or older and will need to complete FICA (Know Your Customer) verification before withdrawing funds.

United States

Sports betting was legalised federally in 2018 after the Supreme Court overturned PASPA. It is now legal in over 35 states including New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Colorado and more. Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) is legal in most states as a skill-based game. Check your state's current status before betting — ESPN's state tracker is a good resource.

2. How Odds Work

Odds tell you two things: the probability the bookmaker assigns to each outcome, and how much you'll win if your bet is successful. There are three main formats:

FormatExampleUsed InMeaning
Decimal2.50South Africa, Europe, AustraliaMultiply stake by odds. R100 × 2.50 = R250 return (R150 profit)
American (Moneyline)+150 / -110USA+150: Bet $100 win $150. -110: Bet $110 win $100
Fractional3/2UK, IrelandWin £3 for every £2 staked (profit only, not total return)
Quick Tip — Converting Odds

To convert decimal odds to implied probability: 1 ÷ decimal odds × 100. So odds of 2.50 = 1/2.50 = 40% implied probability. If you think the true probability is higher than 40%, this is a value bet.

Understanding the Vig (Juice)

Bookmakers don't offer true odds — they build in a margin called the vig or juice. This is how they make money regardless of who wins. For example, a coin flip should be offered at 2.00/2.00 (50%/50%), but a bookmaker might offer 1.91/1.91 — the difference is their margin. Shop around for the best odds before placing any bet.

3. Types of Bets

🏆
Match Result (1X2)
Bet on the result of a match: Home win (1), Draw (X), or Away win (2). The most popular bet type in soccer/football.
Example: Liverpool to win = Home Win (1)
📊
Point Spread
A handicap applied to level the contest. The favourite must win by more than the spread; the underdog can lose by less than the spread and still cover.
Example: Chiefs -3.5 must win by 4+ points
💰
Moneyline
Simply pick who wins, with no spread. Common in US sports. Odds adjust for favourites/underdogs.
Example: Lakers ML -150 (bet $150 to win $100)
⬆️⬇️
Over/Under (Totals)
Bet on the total combined score of a match to be over or under a number set by the bookmaker.
Example: EPL match O/U 2.5 goals
🔗
Parlay / Accumulator
Combine 2+ selections. All must win. Higher payout, higher risk. Known as an acca in SA/UK.
Example: 5-leg acca at R20 could return R2,000+
Both Teams to Score
Bet on whether both teams will score at least one goal. Very popular in soccer across SA and Europe.
Example: BTTS Yes at odds of 1.80
🎯
Correct Score
Predict the exact final score of a match. High risk, high reward — odds can reach 10.00+ for common scores.
Example: Arsenal vs Man City 1-1 at 9.00
👤
Player Props
Bet on individual player statistics — goals, assists, points, rebounds, yards. Most common in NBA, NFL, and DFS.
Example: LeBron over 27.5 points

4. Bankroll Management

The most important skill in sports betting is managing your bankroll. Even profitable bettors have losing runs — without proper staking, a losing streak will wipe out your funds before the winners come.

The 1–3% Rule

Never risk more than 1–3% of your total bankroll on a single bet. If your bankroll is R1,000, your maximum single bet should be R10–R30. This protects you from a losing run and keeps you in the game long enough for your edge to play out.

Bankroll1% Stake2% Stake3% Stake
R500R5R10R15
R1,000R10R20R30
R5,000R50R100R150
$100 (US)$1$2$3
$500 (US)$5$10$15
Warning — Chasing Losses

The single most dangerous habit in betting is increasing your stakes to recover losses ("chasing"). This almost always leads to larger losses. Accept that losing runs are part of betting and stick to your staking plan regardless of recent results.

  3. Complete FICA verification — Upload a copy of your South African ID (green barcoded ID or smart card) and a proof of address (bank statement, utility bill no older than 3 months)
  4. Deposit funds — Most SA bookmakers accept instant EFT via Ozow/PayFast, credit/debit card, and online banking. Minimum deposits are typically R10–R50

6. Betting in the USA — Sports Betting & DFS

Sports Betting vs. Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS)

There are two main ways to bet on sports in the USA:

Top US Sportsbooks Compared

The major licensed sportsbooks operating in the USA are largely similar in the markets and bet types they offer. Key differences:

Pro Tip — Shop for the Best Line

Different sportsbooks post slightly different odds on the same game. Opening accounts at 2–3 books and always betting the best available line (line shopping) can improve your long-term results by 2–5%. Over hundreds of bets, this adds up significantly.

7. Beginner Tips to Bet Smarter

  1. Start small — Begin with your minimum stake until you understand how the markets work
  2. Specialise — Pick one or two sports or leagues you know well. Trying to bet on everything leads to poor decisions
  3. Track every bet — Keep a simple spreadsheet of your bets, odds, stakes and results. You cannot improve what you don't measure
  4. Fade the public — When 80%+ of money is on one side, the odds are often inflated against it. Sometimes the opposite side offers value
  5. Avoid parlays until experienced — Accumulators/parlays are exciting but the house edge compounds with each leg. Begin with single bets
  6. Use bonuses wisely — Read all T&Cs before claiming a welcome bonus. Some require 10× rollover before withdrawal
  7. Set a monthly budget and stick to it — Treat betting as entertainment with a fixed monthly budget, not as income
  8. Take breaks — If you've had a bad run, take a few days off before returning

8. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum age to bet on sports in South Africa?
You must be 18 years or older to place sports bets in South Africa. All licensed bookmakers are required by the National Gambling Act to verify your age before allowing you to deposit or bet. If you are under 18, do not attempt to register with any bookmaker.
Is sports betting taxed in South Africa?
South Africa does not currently levy a specific winnings tax on sports betting for recreational bettors. However, if the South African Revenue Service (SARS) deems betting to be your primary source of income, winnings could be treated as taxable income. For most recreational bettors, winnings are tax-free. Consult a tax professional if you bet at a professional level.
What does -110 odds mean in US sports betting?
Odds of -110 (American format) means you need to bet $110 to win $100 profit. The extra $10 is the bookmaker's commission (the vig or juice). This is the standard price for most point spread and over/under bets in the USA. Your total return would be $210 ($110 stake + $100 profit).
What is a parlay bet and are they worth it?
A parlay (also called an accumulator or multi-bet) combines two or more individual bets into one. All selections must win for the parlay to pay out. The payout is much higher than individual bets, but the house edge also compounds with each additional leg. For beginners, stick to single bets — parcels are entertaining but carry high house edge.
How do I withdraw winnings from a South African bookmaker?
Most SA bookmakers (Hollywoodbets, Betway SA, bet365) pay out to your South African bank account via EFT. You must first complete FICA/KYC verification. Typical withdrawal times are 1–3 business days via EFT, with instant withdrawal available on some platforms. Make sure your bank account name matches your registration name to avoid delays.
